Before its development, the island was known as Sowwah Island. It was a natural, low-lying sandbar and salt flat (sabkha) located northeast of Abu Dhabi’s main island. Unlike many of the UAE’s newer islands, it is a natural landmass, though it required extensive dredging to stabilize its shorelines for construction.
